Build A Clinker Plywood Wooden Boat
I grew up with small clinker boats, small dinghies my father rowed us around in for fun and fishing. I remember him laughing a lot (which he did seldom) when my brother and I tried to launch the dinghy into the surf and capsized. I loved the look and feel of clinker boats, the regular stepped and varnished sides.

Clinker built boats follow the lines of water as they flow along the side of the hull, with perhaps some increased turbulence along the laps. The laps may act to deflect some of the spray, making the boats drier overall, with a tendency to stabilise the boat to a small degree.
Clinker built boats, also known as lapstrake construction, is a strong method of boat building and along with modern glues and plywood, means that the internal frames present in many boats are not needed. This is not the traditional method but gives a hard wearing, strong boat of aesthetic appearance.
Marine Plywood
Marine plywood is the main material here. It has a lot of advantages:
- Marine ply is easily available
- The quality of plywood is usually dependable, although this may need checking
- Suitable planks can be much harder to source
- When glued, plywood stays tight and won’t move about or split
- Temperature and humidity have a lesser effect on plywood
- The boat interior is much easier to manage without frames getting in the way
- The boat will be significantly lighter than regular clinker boats
- Plywood will cost you a lot less
All these advantages mean that an amateur boat builder can produce a well-crafted, traditional and beautiful boat without having to learn and perfect the complex traditional techniques of the master boat builders.

I have looked at MyBoatPlans and this is my sincere take on it, looking at what it provides and what has been left out. No product is perfect but some are really good value for money and deliver a lot.
What is MyBoatPlans?
MyBoatPlans is an internet based information resource for anyone who wants to build a boat themselves but found it difficult due to lack of blueprints, advice, woodworking techniques and general information from an experienced boat-builder. We can’t all have a seasoned boat-builder right next to us but with MyBoatPlans you can have one virtually looking over your shoulder.
The MyBoatPlans package is a collection of 518 boat plans, forty-five videos on boat building and 100s of pages of boat building guides, all well illustrated. MyBoatPlans gives you a complete package containing all the plans and instructions so that you can build pretty much any type of boat you are likely to want.
In the past, unless you had specialised boat-building skills you would have had to spend a lot of money on a small boat with an engine. Now everything has changed and the market has realised the unsatisfied desire for DIY projects such as sheds and boats. All the types of boats which are usually offered for sale are included in the MyBoatPlans package, for a small fraction of the cost of what it would have been not very long ago.
What The MyBoatPlans Package Gives You
The global reach of the internet has allowed people all over the world to share their expertise with us, expertise which would only have been available in a small region before the web.
Once you choose the program and go through the payment process, the MyBoatPlans package can be downloaded straight away! You get the lot, instantly, no waiting. You get the over 500 boat plans, the 40 plus videos and four bonuses claimed to be worth over $1000.
The bonuses are:
- A software program which helps you create any kind of floating object and yes that included boats.
- Rare boat-building books which were always difficult to get hold of.
- 107 boat designs reviewed in-depth.
- A boat-builder’s handbook about safety regulations.
What’s Great About MyBoatPlans?
The sheer number and diversity of boat plans supplied is almost overwhelming. There’s no doubt you will find a design for you amongst the 518 plans provided. If you do one successfully and really want to do another or a more complicated one then you are still spoilt for choice. You could go on building boats for years and not run out of suitable projects. The projects are well written and easy to understand, catering both for beginners’ more easy pieces and for the more confident boat builders’ complex projects.
The package provides over forty-five videos on boat building and covers every aspect of boat building from conceiving the idea to finishing off the completed boat. Beginners will find the videos particularly helpful as it really shows how things are done by an expert. Further videos cover repairing boats and the calculations needed for boat design, which are meant for more experienced boat builders.
The bonuses look really useful, boat design software so you can have a go yourself and books on boat construction.
Martin Reid likes visual instruction so he has included a bunch of full color pictures throughout his materials which will help those who find written instructions more difficult or just incomplete.

What’s Not So Great About MyBoatPlans?
It’s a bit overwhelming! There’s so much information that finding your way about and deciding where to start can be hard to figure out. The great advantage of all the plans being downloadable means that printing them out, if you like plans you can slap on the hull and consult during construction, could be fiddly.
The levels of skill needed for boat construction can be quite high and novice boat-builders might find there are many things they are unsure of, even with the wealth of material provided. You might still need that seasoned boat builder advising you in person.
MyBoatPlans. The Verdict.
Well, you get an amazing amount from the MyBoatPlans package! Martin Reid concentrates on over-delivering, on giving you great value for money so you can’t possibly feel you’re not getting a great deal.
The package offers a huge number of great quality boat plans you can build yourself, is very approachable and well structured. It varies from small craft which could be built quickly to large complex craft such as yachts.
With all this I think that MyBoatPlans is an excellent deal if you want what it is offering, to build a boat with the minimum of expense and hassle.
P.S Huge discount! MyBoatPlans usually sells for over $150 but the price is discounted to $67 for the moment, but don’t delay for too long as it may go up again!

Wooden Boat Plans
Have you been thinking about building a boat? It’s a fun enterprise but full of potential hazards and costs.

Perhaps you can imagine yourself with the wind in your face, your little boat slicing through the ocean waves as you speed along under Nature’s power, enjoying the sun and the sea.
Or perhaps messing about in boats is your thing, always fixing this or that and rubbing down and painting.
There’s a lot of satisfaction and fun for all the family in boating holidays and outings. You can sail serenely when it’s calmer, go fast in strong winds or just stay in one place and sunbathe or fish. It’s up to you and there are so many options.
Whatever your pleasure on the water, you need a boat! Buying one can be very expensive indeed and if you have not learned to maintain it this can be an extra cost every season.
Boats are a bit more complex than structures built on land and there are safety issues! Sinking is best avoided so it needs to be seaworthy and all the parts of the boat need to work well and be durable to cope with the stresses the ocean can put on a boat.
This means that your boat plans and your boat building skills need to be up to scratch to make a successful and safe job of building a boat. However, this doesn’t mean that you can’t manage this project if you, like me, have ordinary woodworking and handyman skills and nothing exceptional.
It’s easy to get started on a boat project, get lost in poor plans and get confused, ending up with a half finished boat which is never going to be suitable for what you want. This could be very expensive. Click here for Martin Reid’s My Boat Plans.
